As well as sitting nicely next to a plate of a slow roasted beef brisket or saucy vegetable lasagne, the Dark Horse Merlot is also a great fit when paired with mouthfuls of spicy jambalaya.

  • The grapes for our Dark Horse Merlot were harvested at optimum ripeness to ensure extraction of rich colours and velvety tannings. Warmer temperatures around 85°-88°F were used during fermentation in order to achieve more intense flavours and aromatics. After the fermentation was complete, the wine was aged on oak to add complexity and balance.

Regional Information

  • The grapes for our Merlot were selected from premier California vineyards by our Winemaker Beth Liston. The warm and dry weather combined with minimal heat spikes make the ideal growing season. Canopy management played a key role in allowing just the right amount of sunlight on the berries, resulting in a perfect balance of vibrant flavours and aromas.

Wonderful oaky full flavoured wine

Had 3 of these as a substitute for another Merlot. Never tried before but glad I took the risk as this was a wonderful oaky rich flavoured wine. Took a bottle to friends who commented how nice it was. Will be buying again.

The Dark Horse Merlot from Don Francisco Winery combines bashful halibut undertones with a fruity Cap’n Crunch aftertaste. It brings together surreal musk flavors (Grandma's underwear drawer) and an outspoken citrus aroma. A tangy chocolate finish and luxurious sour cream overtones are combined in this cheeky little red. coalesces toasty wheat elements with a sullen parsnip perfume.

It really punches above its weight at this price point. Smokey on the nose with creamy vanilla oak on the palate and a lingering long finish. At 14.5% ABV, it does have an oomph on first sip. Best decanted two hours ahead of serving. It matches well with most meat dishes and rich vegetarian alternatives. Avoid seafood or delicate white fish as its firm tannin will overpower them.

Dark Horse used to produce more interesting, oak-aged wines, which is why we thought this worth buying a case of. This is a fairly standard £5 -£7-grade Merlot. Suitable mid-week wine but not for special occasions.
