History

The name Ara (pronounced ‘are-ah') is both the indigenous Maori word for “pathway” and Latin for “altar”. Both definitions are compatible with the winemaker's philosophy. Ara captures its adventurous spirit; it also echoes a deep respect for tradition and the environment. Fusing the time-honoured art of winemaking with fresh ideas, Ara amplifies and refines the natural qualities of the remarkable Wairau Valley location. The result is a strikingly different Marlborough, New Zealand experience.

Regional Information

Located on the north-easterly tip of South Island, the Marlborough flats are protected from the tropical north-westerlies by the Richmond Ranges, separating Marlborough from Nelson. It is similarly protected from the frost-bearing Antarctic south-easterlies racing up the eastern coastline by the Kaikoura Ranges. The region consequently experiences low rainfall, together with high sunshine hours and a significant diurnal shift between day and night temperatures, thus preserving the aromatics
