220 new jobs created at new Tesco store in Drogheda
1,000 Jobs as a result of 2008 Store Openings

Monday, December 8, 2008: Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform, Dermot Ahern today officially opened the new Tesco Extra store in Drogheda, Co. Louth. Located in the Rathmullan Business Centre, just off the M1 motorway, the new store creates 220 new jobs and is Tesco Ireland’s 15th new store opened during 2008. Tesco’s store opening programme this year has accounted for over 1,000 new jobs in eleven counties.

Performing the official opening, Minister Ahern said: "The opening of this new Tesco store is excellent news for Drogheda and for the Region. Tesco will create 220 new jobs which is a major boost to the economy of the local area. This is Tesco's fourth store alone in Louth and they are to be commended for their commitment to their store opening programme and to job creation. Tesco are also involved with a large number of local suppliers and I was also pleased to learn of the many environmental initiatives which this new store will be involved in."

Tony Keohane, Chief Executive, Tesco Ireland, on welcoming the Minister to the new store, said: "Today’s opening marks a significant milestone for us with over 1,000 new jobs created by our store opening programme this year. It will also bring undoubted benefit for consumers and the economy of Drogheda and the surrounding area by creating 220 new local jobs. We are also supporting a number of local suppliers and producers who will supply products to this store and to many others throughout the country."
