Getting a New Pet

Pet ownership costs

There are many unforeseen expenses to consider when buying a pet. Young pets normally require vital treatment such as spaying, neutering or immunisation. As animals get older they typically require more veterinary treatment which is why it makes sound sense to take out pet insurance before medical costs escalate.

Consider the following before buying a pet

  • Look ahead - can you give an animal a good home for the rest of its life?
  • Where do you live? A large dog will be uncomfortable in a small flat
  • Can you afford to keep it? Pets need much more than just food and water
  • Is it house-trained to live indoors?
  • If you have a garden make sure it's secure
  • Will the pet fit into the family and vice versa

Quality time

  • Animals, like humans, get lonely if left on their own for long periods
  • Remember, dogs depend on their owners for walks
  • Cats get lonely. If you're out during the day, you may want to get two cats to keep each other company

Tips on buying a pet as a gift

Make sure to match the demands of the pet to the lifestyle and situation of your friend.

Elderly people or people with a tiny flat may not enjoy the demands of a great dane puppy.

Unless you are an expert take time to learn about the characteristics and temperament of different breeds and match these to your friend.

Other considerations...

Consider whether your friend will have time to look after a pet. If you get a puppy they will have to train and exercise the puppy. Think about the future, will the owner be able to give as much of his/her attention to their pet in a couple of year's time?

If you want to buy a pet for your children choose a pet that suits their age and research breeds that go well with children.

Before buying a pet as a gift for someone you need to make sure that they are ready for the responsibility a pet brings. If there is any doubt in your mind, getting a pet is not advisable as it could result in an unwanted and unloved animal.
