Pre-trip checklist

Tesco Car Insurance is provided by RSA Insurance Ireland Ltd.

Before you head off on a road trip, there are also a number of things to consider ensuring the journey is a safe and enjoyable one.

  • Check your tyre pressure is at the recommended pressure and that you have the required tread on all of your tyres.
  • Make sure that your coolant fluids are at the required levels. Check that you have the proper level of oil in your engine (using the dipstick). Don't forget to check your car's brake fluid and if your car has power-steering, check the power-steering fluid levels too. You'll probably need to refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for advice on checking all the fluids.
  • Check your seat belt to make sure that it's not worn, loose or frayed.
  • Get someone to test all your vehicle's lights while walking around your vehicle. Check to see that your cars headlights are operational (high and low-beam) that your fog lights are working (if you have them), and your brake lights and indicators all work.
  • Inspect your wiper blades for cracks or tears. Even if they appear to be in good shape, it's still a good idea to wipe the rubber blade clean.
  • Check to see if there is any corrosion on your battery terminals. If there is corrosion, clean it away with a solution of water and baking soda using an old toothbrush.
  • Make sure your spare tyre is in good condition, inflated to the recommended pressure and that your wheel spanner and jack are operational. You may also want to carry a tyre inflator kit.
  • Make sure also that you are displaying your up to date car insurance, motor tax and NCT discs.

In addition, here are a few things to consider on your trip.

  • A first-aid kit may prove invaluable and is highly recommended.
  • A basic tool kit including a socket-wrench set, adjustable wrench, replacement fuses and other basic tools.
  • Jump leads will be a valuable addition in your vehicle in the event of battery failure.
  • Depending on the weather you may want to consider taking a warm blanket, some food rations and drinking water.
  • If not included in your car, an orange cone or a hazard sign are a good idea in case of roadside emergencies.

Undertaking a thorough checklist of your vehicle will hopefully prevent any road incidents. Drive safely and enjoy your trip
