I've been a named driver on someone else's policy for a few years - does that entitle me to a no claims discount if I start my own policy?

Yes, a driver named on someone else's policy will be credited with the appropriate introductory no claims discount, according to the number of full years they are named as a driver. For example, if the driver is named for 3 years and 6 months, they shall receive an introductory no claims discount of 3 years. The granting of this introductory no claims discount is subject to:

  • The driver holding a full EU driving licence at the time he/she is proposing for motor insurance
  • The driver having held no previous insurance in their own name
  • The driver having no more than 4 penalty points on their licence.
  • The driver being accident/claims free for the last 3 years, conviction free for the last 5 years and disqualification free for the last 10 years.

I'm getting a second vehicle, can I use my no claims bonus twice?

No, the no claims discount has to stay with one vehicle at a time.

As a named driver, can I drive someone else's car with their permission?

No. Only the policyholder can drive other cars provided that the certificate of insurance states the policyholder may drive other cars.

Can I use my car abroad?

Yes, Tesco Car Insurance gives you full cover within the EU for 31 days, within your insurance period. Green Cards are not necessary for travel in most European countries. For travel to a country which still requires a Green Card to be issued, this will also be included at no additional expense.

Do you insure motorbikes/caravans/boats/commercial vehicles?

Sorry no, only privately owned cars.

How do I pay for my cover with Tesco Car Insurance?

To cut administration costs and keep our prices down for our customers, we take payment by credit card, laser card or by monthly installments via Direct Debit. Please note that we are unable to accept cheques, postal orders, money orders or cash.

Can I pay by installments?

Yes, you can pay by installments via the Direct Debit facility, however we will require a deposit by Credit Card or Laser Card and a service charge will be applied for the installment facility.

Do Tesco Car Insurance policies offer a courtesy car in the event of an accident?

If you choose to use the approved repairer scheme, Tesco Car Insurance will supply a courtesy car - for 7 days on a Standard policy and 14 days in the case of theft on a Finest policy.

I am currently insured to drive a company car through my employer. Do these claim free years contribute to a no claim discount?

Yes, if you had full time use of company vehicle (on Full Licence) and are retiring or coming off the company fleet policy, you will be credited with the appropriate no claims bonus, according to the number of years named. To do this, you need to obtain two letters - one from your previous employer stating you had full time use of a company vehicle claim free, and one from your former employers insurer stating that no accidents or claims were recorded in the last 3 years against you while on their policy.
In addition, you should have no more than 4 penalty points on your licence and be conviction free for the last 5 years and disqualification free for the last 10 years.

What is the Fixed Expense charge?

Each Tesco Car Insurance policy includes a fixed expense charge, which is currently €45, and is an amount which will not be refunded to you, should you cancel your policy after the cooling off period.
