Customer choice, Health, Nutrition and Community

Supermarkets have a responsibility to help customers make the right choices. We do that by offering a diverse range of products at affordable prices and providing the information people need.

  • Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) labelling is available on 5,000 of our own-brand products
  • Sales of our Wholefoods range grew by 300% last year
  • We have expanded our organic foods range
  • We launched an in-store Get Active booklet
  • We launched a Back to School mailing, highlighting healthy eating for kids

Our objective

Tesco Ireland aims to make healthy eating more affordable for customers by developing our Healthy Living range, introducing nutritional labelling on all our own brand products, and prioritising healthy eating promotional campaigns.

Our actions

We have launched several initiatives in recent years to make healthy eating more affordable and appealing at Tesco. For example:

  • In 2007 we relaunched our Healthy Living range with over XXX products now available
  • We have expanded our Wholefoods range - snacks such as dried fruits, nuts and seeds and "store cupboard" products such as pulses and grains. They are natural products with a minimum of processing
  • We increased our Organic Range, introducing convenient products such as Tesco Organic Rocket Salad, Tesco Organic Salmon, and Organic Salmon Citrus
  • We launched "Superfood" juices such as Tesco Pomegranate and Multivitamin juices, and introduced Tesco Healthy Living cheeses
  • We introduced a number of Tesco Kids Cereals, expanded our range of Tesco mueslis and also introduced a range of Tesco honeys, Tesco reduced sugars and Tesco herbal teas
  • We expanded our fruits and exotic fruits ranges

Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) labelling

GDA labelling indicates the amount of salt, sugar, calories, fat and saturated fat that a serving of a product contains, compared with the recommended Guideline Daily Amounts.

It gives our customers an efficient and easy way to choose healthy products and is especially useful for those who are counting calories or have health issues.

GDA labelling is available on over 5,000 of our own-brand food products. We chose the GDA labelling system because it helps people plan healthy, balanced meals.

GDA labelling has been adopted by many the main suppliers in Ireland and it appears on products in 25 of the 27 EU member states.

We plan to roll out this labelling to the remainder of our own brand products within 18 months.

In-store and community initiatives

We ran a number of promotional campaigns last year as part of our strategy to make healthy living more affordable. These included:

  • A 25% price promotion on our Tesco "Free From" range, Wholefoods range, Organic range, Superfoods range and Tesco Vitamin & Mineral range. This campaign was supported by in-store tastings and in-store customer information leaflets promoting healthy eating and a more active lifestyle
  • Our "Get Active" booklet which features testimonials of people who have taken on a healthy lifestyle and highlights the benefits of Tesco’s Healthy Living range
  • "Back to School" mailing campaign about star foods and healthy eating for kids
  • Nestlé Wholegrain cereal event, on the benefits of eating wholegrain cereals as part of a healthy breakfast
  • "Super Foods" event, focusing on our Superfoods range. A joint initiative with safefood (the Food Safety Promotion Board), this was a very visual in-store campaign that highlighted the benefits of Super Foods for kids

Responsible about alcohol and tobacco

Our approach to healthy living also encompasses the responsible retailing of alcohol and cigarettes. We are fully committed to playing our part. We already have strict policies to prevent underage sales of alcohol and tobacco. All retail staff involved with the sale of alcohol and tobacco are trained on the legal implications of selling such products to underage customers.
