Tesco have introduced Community Champions in ten (Cashel, Kilrush, Bailieborough, Birr, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Tramore, Bettystown, Abbeyfeale and Westport) of their stores. They were introduced in response to research amongst Store Managers and staff. Community Champions are Customer Assistants and report to Customer Service Manager / Check Manager. Their role is to create links with the local community and to utilise Tesco skills, knowledge and resources to make a difference in that community. As Community Champion, their task is to understand local community issues.

Irish Cancer Society partners with Tesco Ireland to roll out national ‘Care to Drive’ service

Tesco has announced the Irish Cancer Society as their new Staff Charity of the Year for 2010 & 2011, with all funds raised through the two year partnership going towards the rollout of ‘Care to Drive’, a national volunteer driving service for cancer patients. The Irish Cancer Society launched its pilot volunteer transportation service called Care to Drive in June 2008. This scheme is operated by the Irish Cancer Society in partnership with the Social Work Department at St. Vincent’s University Hospital. Carefully selected and trained volunteers collect the patients from their homes in South Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow and Wexford and drive them to their appointments and back to their homes following these appointments. Since the launch and up to the end of 2009, 117 drivers had completed 1,355 journeys for 118 patients and covered approximately 42,000 kms.
